Few distance runners have had a career with as many turns as Guye Adola. In September 2017 he finished second in his very first marathon, behind Eliud Kipchoge, in 2:03:46 — at that point the fastest debut over the distance in history. Four years later he beat Kenenisa Bekele to win in the same city. Then came several quieter seasons, and in 2026 the strongest year of his career: wins in Rotterdam on 12 April and in Berlin on 27 September, the second of them in a personal best of 2:02:50.
This profile of Guye Adola is built on his World Athletics profile, checked on 22 October 2026, where he is listed as Guye Idemo Adola. Every race over the full distance, with times and places, is on Guye Adola marathon results, and his four races in the German capital have their own page, Guye Adola Berlin.

Before the long distance: a breakthrough over 21 km in 2014
World Athletics gives his date of birth as 20 October 1990. His place of birth appears in only one secondary source, which we could not verify, so we leave it out.

His first big international result came at the start of 2014. On 26 January 2014 he won the Marrakesh Half Marathon in 1:01:26. On 29 March 2014 he took bronze at the IAAF World Half Marathon Championships in Copenhagen in 59:21 — his first medal at a global championship. On 21 April 2014 he ran 28:22 for 10 km on the road in Dongio, Switzerland, and on 23 November 2014 he won the New Delhi Half Marathon in 59:06. That time is still his half-marathon best as of October 2026. Within ten months of 2014 he had gone from a first international win to a global medal and a sub-60-minute best.

Both races are listed by World Athletics as of 22 October 2026. Before the autumn race, Marathon Handbook reported him saying he was in the best shape of his life; on race day, according to race reports, he broke away from the leading group between roughly 25 and 30 km. After the two wins he stood No. 8 in the World Athletics men’s marathon ranking on 22 October 2026. His best ever placing in that list is No. 5, held for eight weeks. In the other World Athletics lists his best placings are No. 29 in men’s road running, No. 61 overall and No. 103 in the 10,000m (as listed on 22 October 2026). The 2026 season was also the first since 2014 in which the database credits him with more than one win.
Starts and wins in the World Athletics database
Counted on 22 October 2026, his World Athletics profile contains 32 results from 2014 to 2026. All are finals; seven are wins and one is a DNF (Valencia, 1 December 2024). His most active year in the database is 2014 with six starts, and there are no entries at all for 2022.
| Year | Starts | Wins |
|---|---|---|
| 2014 | 6 | 2 |
| 2015 | 2 | 0 |
| 2016 | 3 | 0 |

| 2026 | 2 | 2 |
The pattern is clear from the table: in his half-marathon years (2014–2019) he raced two to six times a season, while since 2021 the database shows one or two starts a year, almost all of them marathons. Of the seven wins, four came over the half marathon and three over the full distance.
These numbers come from the World Athletics database, in which heats and finals are counted separately and which may be incomplete. For Guye Adola the gap is obvious — a whole season is missing, as are domestic Ethiopian races — so the real number of his races is higher than 32.
