This page lists every Guye Adola marathon recorded in the World Athletics database as of 22 October 2026 — ten starts between September 2017 and September 2026, with three wins, seven podium places, one DNF and a personal best of 2:02:50 from Berlin on 27 September 2026. One caveat first: the database has no results for him in 2022, so any race he ran that year is missing from the list.
Before moving to the full distance he was a world-class half marathoner, with bronze at the 2014 World Half Marathon Championships and a best of 59:06. That part of his career, and his background, is on the main Guye Adola page.

Debut and the first marathons (2017–2019)
Berlin 2017: second on debut
He came to the marathon after winning the Roma-Ostia Half Marathon in March 2017 in 59:18. On 24 September 2017 he finished second in Berlin behind Eliud Kipchoge in 2:03:46, which was then the fastest marathon debut ever recorded. The mark is not an official record category and has since been bettered by other debutants.
London 2018: a hard second race
His next marathon, in London on 22 April 2018, ended in 17th place in 2:32:35 — almost half an hour slower than his debut and the slowest finish in his list.
Valencia 2019: back on the podium
On 1 December 2019 he finished third in Valencia in 2:04:42, the second-fastest time of his career at that point and 56 seconds outside his debut best. It was his first marathon podium outside Berlin.
A major title and a long middle period (2021–2025)
Berlin 2021: first win
On 26 September 2021 he won in Berlin in 2:05:45, ahead of Kenenisa Bekele in third — his first marathon victory and his first at an Abbott World Marathon Major. The Berlin races have a separate page: Guye Adola Berlin.
Paris and Frankfurt 2023
After the missing 2022 season he ran two marathons in 2023 and finished on the podium in both: second in Paris on 2 April (2:07:35) and third in Frankfurt on 29 October (2:07:44). Both times were roughly two minutes slower than his winning time in Berlin in 2021.
Valencia 2024 and Berlin 2025
He did not finish in Valencia on 1 December 2024 — the only DNF in his World Athletics results. On 21 September 2025 he was fourth in Berlin in 2:07:11.
2026: Rotterdam and a new personal best
His 2026 season brought the two fastest wins of his career. In Rotterdam on 12 April he won in 2:03:54, his first sub-2:04 marathon since the 2017 debut and his first marathon win outside Berlin. On 27 September 2026 he won again in Berlin in 2:02:50. According to race reports he left the leading group between about 25 and 30 km. With two marathon wins in one calendar year, 2026 is the most successful season over the distance in his World Athletics results, and the Rotterdam win ended a gap of four and a half years without a marathon victory in the database.
How his marathon times progressed
His personal best changed only twice in nine years. The 2:03:46 from September 2017 stood until 27 September 2026, when he improved it by 56 seconds. Rotterdam in April 2026 (2:03:54) came within eight seconds of the old mark. Of his ten marathons in the database, four were run in Berlin, two in Valencia and one each in London, Paris, Frankfurt and Rotterdam.
In pace terms, 2:02:50 means an average of about 2:55 per kilometre over 42.195 km, against about 2:56 per kilometre both in Rotterdam in April 2026 and in his 2017 debut. The difference between his best and his slowest finished race — 2:32:35 in London in 2018 — is almost 30 minutes, which shows how far apart his good and bad days over the distance have been.
In the World Athletics men’s marathon ranking he was No. 8 on 22 October 2026; his best placing in that list is No. 5, held for eight weeks.
