Dawit Tesfaye is the lead betting analyst at Ethio Betting and the author of all our bookmaker reviews. He lives and works in Addis Ababa and has followed the Ethiopian betting market since the first licensed online sportsbooks appeared, roughly between 2019 and 2021.
Before joining Ethio Betting, Dawit worked as a sports journalist and later as a football data analyst, covering both the big European leagues and the Ethiopian Premier League. That combination – reporting on the game and working with numbers – shapes the way he reviews bookmakers: every claim is checked against evidence, and anything that sounds too good gets a second look.
How Dawit tests a bookmaker
- Identifies the brand: its real domain, the company behind it, its licence history with the national regulator and any public warnings from the Ethiopian Lottery Service.
- Maps the look-alikes: clone domains, fake apps and affiliate pages that copy the name.
- Where the brand accepts players, opens an account with an Ethiopian phone number and reads the terms, the verification rules and the responsible gambling tools.
- Studies the cashier: which payment methods in birr are listed, the limits, fees, payout times and bonus conditions.
- Compares odds on the same football matches across bookmakers and checks live betting and cash-out.
- Tests the mobile site and app on an Android phone, including where the app file comes from.
- Contacts support with real questions and notes the language and response time.
- Scores the five criteria at 20% each and records the date of the check. Brands that are offline are documented from their own channels and press reports.
