Keno betting online in Ethiopia grew quickly in the years before the 2025 shutdown. It is a simple number draw – pick a few numbers, wait for the draw, get paid according to how many you matched – and short rounds made it a staple next to Aviator and virtual football. According to Shega, keno and Aviator were among the games driving a boom in virtual betting among young Ethiopians in 2025.
This guide explains how keno works, where it was offered, what the real odds are and why it pays to treat it as entertainment with a fixed budget. One caution up front: we could not find published rules, draw intervals or paytables for the Ethiopian versions of the game, so we describe the standard format and show an illustrative paytable rather than invent figures.
How keno works
The standard keno format uses a field of 80 numbers, from which 20 are drawn in each round. Before the draw you choose your own numbers – called "spots" – and a stake. The more of your spots appear among the 20 drawn numbers, the bigger the payout. How many spots you may pick and how much each result pays are set by the operator in its paytable, so two keno games can look the same and pay very differently.
A keno round step by step
- Open the keno game and choose how many spots you want to play.
- Pick your numbers on the board, or use a quick-pick button if the game has one.
- Set your stake per round and, if offered, the number of consecutive rounds.
- Wait for the draw of 20 numbers; the game highlights your matches.
- Check the paytable result: the payout depends on the number of spots and matches.
Fast Keno and Classic Keno
The ELS digital platform lists two versions, Fast Keno and Classic Keno. We could not find official rules describing exactly how they differ, so read the help screen of the game before playing. Draw frequency also varies by product and operator; we have not seen a published figure for any Ethiopian keno game.
Keno on the official ELS platform
The Ethiopian Lottery Service (ELS) – the regulator itself – reportedly launched a digital platform with the technology company TAMCON on 12 April 2025. Its virtual-games section at ethiolottery.et lists Fast Keno and Classic Keno next to Fast Bingo, Mini Roulette, Chicken Road, Fish Road and other titles. This is the state lottery's own product, not a private bookmaker.
The regulator has a cautious history with fast games: in December 2022 it closed 20 shops running unauthorised virtual games and stated that virtual betting games were not separately licensable. The wider legal picture, including the revocation of all sports-betting licences in December 2025, is covered in our guide to betting in Ethiopia. We have not checked whether every game on the ELS platform is available at any given moment.
Which betting sites offered keno
Among the brands we review, keno was confirmed at the following sites. Most local operators have stopped since December 2025, so the last column shows the website status at our check on 9 October 2026.
| Brand | Keno offer | Website (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| QwickBirr | Golden Race Keno; keno in the Android app | Online – status unclear |
| BetX | Spribe Keno among its instant games | Online – status unclear |
| Abol Bet | Keno and classic keno next to sports and virtuals | Not reachable / suspended |
| Habtam Bet | Keno on a virtual-games platform with Aviator and Mines | Not reachable / suspended |
| TotoSport | Keno section on the betting site | Not reachable / suspended |
Ahadu Birr reportedly offers keno inside its lotto category, which we could not confirm. For more detail on the two brands with the clearest keno focus, read our reviews of QwickBirr and Abol Bet; Habtam Bet's history is covered in the Habtam Bet review.
Keno odds: what the numbers really say
Unlike a paytable, the probabilities of the standard 20-from-80 format can be calculated exactly. They do not depend on which numbers you pick – every combination has the same chance.
| Spots picked | Result | Probability | Roughly |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 match | 25.00% | 1 in 4 |
| 2 | 2 matches | 6.01% | 1 in 17 |
| 3 | 3 matches | 1.39% | 1 in 72 |
| 4 | 4 matches | 0.31% | 1 in 326 |
| 5 | 5 matches | 0.06% | 1 in 1,551 |
| 10 | 10 matches | 0.0000112% | 1 in 8.9 million |
| 10 | 0 matches | 4.58% | 1 in 22 |
The pattern is clear: picking more spots makes a full match dramatically less likely, which is why games advertise huge multipliers on the top lines. A big multiplier on a result you will almost never see adds very little to what you get back over time.
Example keno paytable (illustrative)
The paytable below is an illustrative example that we built to show how keno maths works. It is not the paytable of any Ethiopian operator or of the ELS platform. Payouts are shown as a multiple of the stake, including the stake itself; the last column is the long-run return of that line, calculated from the exact probabilities.
| Spots | Matches that pay (× stake) | Chance of any payout | Return to player |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 match: 3× | 25.0% | 75.0% |
| 2 | 2 matches: 12× | 6.0% | 72.2% |
| 3 | 2 matches: 1×; 3 matches: 40× | 15.3% | 69.4% |
| 4 | 2 matches: 1×; 3 matches: 5×; 4 matches: 100× | 25.9% | 73.5% |
| 5 | 3 matches: 2×; 4 matches: 20×; 5 matches: 500× | 9.7% | 73.2% |
In this example, for every 100 birr staked over many rounds, around 70–75 birr comes back and the rest is the house edge. Real paytables differ, and the only way to know the return of a specific game is to read its rules. If a game does not publish its paytable, that is a reason to be careful.
Keno myths to ignore
- "Hot" and "cold" numbers. Each draw is independent. A number that came up five times in a row is no more and no less likely to appear next.
- Patterns on the board. Lines, corners or birthdays have exactly the same probability as any other set of numbers.
- Chasing losses. Raising the stake after a losing streak does not change the odds; it only increases how much you can lose in a short time.
- Systems for sale. Anyone selling a "keno system" on Telegram is selling a story. No staking plan beats a fixed house edge.
Playing keno responsibly
Keno's main risk is speed. Rounds follow each other quickly, the stakes look small and it is easy to lose track of how much has gone. Decide your budget for the session before you start, stop when it is spent, and never play with money meant for rent, food or school fees. Betting is for adults aged 21 and over. If keno or any other game has stopped being fun, our responsible gambling page lists warning signs and free sources of help.
Keno betting online in Ethiopia FAQ
How does keno betting online in Ethiopia work?
In the standard format 20 numbers are drawn from 80, and you are paid according to how many of your chosen numbers match. Pick limits and payouts are set by each operator's paytable.
Where can you play keno in Ethiopia?
The ELS digital platform lists Fast Keno and Classic Keno. Among private brands, QwickBirr and BetX had keno on sites that were online at our October 2026 check, although no betting operator holds an Ethiopian licence at present.
How often is the keno draw?
It depends on the game and the operator. We did not find an official draw interval for any Ethiopian keno product, so check the game's rules.
What are the odds of winning at keno?
With one spot you match 1 time in 4; with five spots, all five match about 1 time in 1,551. The house edge is built into the paytable.
Is there a keno strategy that works?
No. Every combination of numbers has the same chance, and past draws do not affect future ones. The only real control you have is your stake and your budget.
