The headline Fotyen Tesfay record is the Ethiopian women’s marathon record of 2:10:51, set in Barcelona on 15 March 2026 in her first race over 42.195 km. Around it sit a Barcelona course record, two half-marathon event records reported in Berlin (2025) and Buenos Aires (2026), and a set of personal bests that runs from 4:23.37 for 1500m in 2014 to that marathon time.
Below, each Fotyen Tesfay record is listed with its date, place and status as of 22 October 2026. We use the times as published by World Athletics. Her career story is told on the main Fotyen Tesfay page.
Ethiopian marathon record: 2:10:51
Barcelona, 15 March 2026
She won the Zurich Marató de Barcelona in 2:10:51 on 15 March 2026. World Athletics marks the result “NR” — national record — in her profile. According to Track & Field News she was inside world-record pace until about 37 km. The full race story is on the Fotyen Tesfay marathon page.

The mark it replaced
The previous Ethiopian record was 2:11:53 by Tigst Assefa, run in Berlin on 24 September 2023 in a mixed race. That time was the world record when it was set and was ratified as such; it has since been beaten. Both women train in the group of coach Gemedu Dedefo, so the national record passed from one training partner to another.
Status as of 22 October 2026
The record still stands, 62 seconds faster than the mark it replaced. Tigst Assefa ran a personal best of 2:11:04 in Berlin on 27 September 2026, which is 13 seconds slower than 2:10:51 and so did not change the national record. The “NR” mark next to 2:10:51 was shown in her World Athletics profile when we checked on 22 October 2026.
Fastest debut and the world record picture
Track & Field News described her 2026 time of 2:10:51 as the fastest women’s marathon debut in history and, at the time of the race, the second-fastest women’s marathon ever. Neither of these is an official record category of World Athletics; they are statistical marks that can change with the next fast race.
World Athletics keeps two women’s marathon world records. As of 22 October 2026 they are:
- mixed race (with male pacemakers allowed): 2:09:56, set in Chicago in 2024;
- women-only race: 2:15:41 by Tigst Assefa, London, 26 April 2026.
Her own target for the Valencia Marathon on 6 December 2026 has been described by running media as an attempt on the world record. Whether she gets there or not, the result will be published by World Athletics after the race, and we will update this page.

Half Marathon in November 2023 she ran 1:08:46, and less than a year later, in Valencia on 27 October 2024, she lowered her best to 1:03:21 — more than seven minutes faster than her debut at the distance five years earlier. Her two half-marathon wins since then, in Berlin in 2025 and Buenos Aires in 2026, both came within 36 seconds of that best.
