Anyone looking up a Fotyen Tesfay marathon result will find exactly one as of 22 October 2026: the Barcelona Marathon of 15 March 2026, which she won in 2:10:51 at her first attempt at the distance. That single race made her the Ethiopian record holder and, according to Track & Field News, produced the fastest marathon debut by any woman.

The road form that came before Barcelona
She arrived at the marathon with a long record on the roads. Her first half marathon was the Great North Run in 2019 (eighth, 1:10:26). After a gap in her results between 2020 and 2022 she won the B.A.A. Half Marathon on 12 November 2023 in 1:08:46, then took more than five minutes off that time within a year: 1:03:21 for second place in Valencia on 27 October 2024.
In 2025 she added a 10 km road best of 29:42 in Valencia (12 January) and won the Berlin Half Marathon on 6 April in 1:03:35. Her best placing in the World Athletics women’s road running ranking is No. 2 — the highest she has reached in any ranking list, as of 22 October 2026. On the track, her 10,000m best is 29:47.71 from June 2024.
Barcelona Marathon, 15 March 2026
How the debut unfolded
Track & Field News reported that she ran inside world-record pace until about 37 km on 15 March 2026; after the race she put the missed record down to the wind. She still won in 2:10:51, the course record for Barcelona and, according to World Athletics, a new Ethiopian national record.
The pace in numbers
A finish of 2:10:51 works out at an average of about 3:06 per kilometre over the full 42.195 km. For comparison, her half-marathon best of 1:03:21 (Valencia, October 2024) corresponds to roughly 3:00 per kilometre, so in Barcelona she held a pace only around six seconds per kilometre slower than her fastest half marathon — for twice the distance. Doubling that half-marathon best gives 2:06:42; the gap between that figure and her actual marathon time is a rough measure of how much a runner slows when the distance doubles.
Where 2:10:51 ranks
At the time of the race the time was the second-fastest women’s marathon ever run, and it took the Ethiopian record from her training partner Tigst Assefa, whose 2:11:53 from Berlin in September 2023 had stood until then. As of 22 October 2026 the world record for women in a mixed race is 2:09:56, set in Chicago in 2024. Details of every record she holds are on the Fotyen Tesfay record page.
Training group and the Buenos Aires tune-up
She is coached by Gemedu Dedefo, whose group also includes Tigst Assefa and Tamirat Tola, according to Track & Field News and Runner’s World Germany. We found no verified details of her training programme, so we do not repeat unconfirmed accounts.
Between the two marathons she raced once. On 23 August 2026 she won the Buenos Aires Half Marathon in 1:03:57; race reports called it an event record and the first women’s half marathon under 64 minutes in the Americas. Marathon Handbook presented the race as part of her build-up to Valencia.
Valencia Marathon, 6 December 2026
The Valencia organisers announced her in the elite field on 2 July 2026. Running media, among them Marathon Handbook and Canadian Running, wrote that the target is the world record. Official start lists can change up to race day, so treat the field as provisional until the final list appears on the official Valencia Marathon site.
The same announcement listed Yomif Kejelcha for the men’s race, so 6 December 2026 brings two Ethiopian headliners to one course. Valencia is familiar ground for her: she ran her half-marathon best there on 27 October 2024 (1:03:21) and her 10 km road best on 12 January 2025 (29:42). Other dates in the coming months are listed on our Ethiopian athletes hub.
Where to watch the Valencia Marathon in Ethiopia
The organisers broadcast the elite race live on their website with English commentary, and in 2025 the regional channel A Punt was listed as a free worldwide stream. For Ethiopia, StarTimes and SuperSport were listed in 2025; the broadcaster list for 6 December 2026 had not been published as of 22 October 2026.
