Hagos Gebrhiwet Records

The records and best times of Hagos Gebrhiwet on the track and the road.

The best-known Hagos Gebrhiwet record is the Ethiopian 5000m mark of 12:36.73, set at the Bislett Games in Oslo on 30 May 2024. It is not the only one: as a junior he set two world U20 records, and since 2023 he has put together a set of road bests from 5 km to the half marathon. This page lists each of them with the date, the place and its status as of 22 October 2026.

For his medals and the full career, see the main profile of Hagos Gebrhiwet. Marks and statuses here follow his World Athletics profile, which we checked on 22 October 2026.

Records he holds and has held

Ethiopian 5000m record: 12:36.73, Oslo, 30 May 2024

He won the 5000m at the Oslo Diamond League meeting on 30 May 2024 in 12:36.73. As of 22 October 2026 the time stands as the Ethiopian record, and World Athletics data at that date places it second on the all-time list behind the world record. It is also his personal best at the distance. Split times are not part of the result data we used, so we do not quote laps.

The record did not lead straight to a medal that summer: at the Paris Olympics on 10 August 2024 he finished fifth. He did win again in Rome on 30 August 2024 in 12:51.07.

Former world U20 5000m record: 12:47.53, Paris, 6 July 2012

At the Paris Diamond League meeting on 6 July 2012 he finished second in 12:47.53, two months after his 18th birthday. According to record lists, the time was a world U20 (junior) record and stood until 2018, when Selemon Barega broke it. It is a former record, not a current one.

Former world U20 indoor 3000m record: 7:32.87, Boston, 2 February 2013

Indoors in Boston on 2 February 2013 he ran 7:32.87 for 3000m. According to record lists, that was a world U20 indoor record at the time; it is listed today as a former record. As of 22 October 2026 it remains his best indoor 3000m.

Two times that do not count for records

World Athletics shows two of his marks with a flag that they are not valid for record purposes because of the course or conditions. The first is the 27:57 for 10 km at the San Silvestre Vallecana in Madrid on 31 December 2011, which he won; that is why his official 10 km road best is the slower 28:15 from Boston on 21 June 2026. The second is his marathon debut in Sydney on 30 August 2026, where he was 17th in 2:10:56. The result itself stands, and it is still listed as his marathon best.

Road bests: 5 km, 10 km and the half marathon

Over 5 km his best is 12:58 from a win in Al Khobar on 14 December 2024. One second slower, 12:59, was enough for the world road 5 km title in Riga on 1 October 2023. He also won the B.A.A. 5K in Boston in 13:42 in both 2018 and 2019, and in 2024 took road 5 km wins in Leicester on 16 March (13:19) and Paris on 5 April (13:24).

At 10 km his record-eligible best is 28:15 from the B.A.A. 10K on 21 June 2026, where he was fourth. His wins at the distance include the Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa in 2012 (28:37) and 2018 (28:55), and Trieste on 18 October 2020 (29:49).

In the half marathon his fastest time is 57:41 from Valencia on 22 October 2023, where he finished third. His two wins at the distance came in Granollers on 5 February 2023 (58:55) and in Barcelona on 15 February 2026 (58:05).

Track bests beyond 5000m

His 3000m best of 7:30.36 dates from his win at the Doha Diamond League on 10 May 2013, more than 13 years before his first marathon. Over 10,000m his best is 26:48.95 from Hengelo on 17 July 2019, the season in which he went on to finish seventh at the World Championships in Doha on 6 October 2019. How these marks fit into his 5000m career is explained on the page Hagos Gebrhiwet 5000m.
